Al fresco dining using outdoor fabric

Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days longer we are wanting to spend more time in our gardens.

Designing a pleasant eating area for al fresco dining is a great way to relax outside and you don't need a huge garden, small gardens and sunny courtyards can all be used to create a space to entertain friends. Using outdoor fabric is a great way to create a seating area in your garden.

Whilst on holiday in Spain recently I came across a beach bar which I've used for inspiration for a Moorish design. With the south of Spain being so close to Morocco it has been influenced by Moorish architecture and design. These ideas can be transferred to gardens here to create a beach vibe with a Moorish twist. Moroccan fabric tends to have geometric patterns in spicy colours such as cinnamon, saffron and paprika.

Simple seating can be made by using pallets or rendered breeze blocks - this may not be a job for all but certainly a competent diy-er would be able to tackle this task. If using breeze blocks you could paint the seats in spicy tones or shades of blue to reflect the Moroccan style. To make the seating area comfortable use cushions made from foam, covered in an outdoor fabric, this is great as you can leave these outside all summer. Add some cushions and floor cushions covered in an ikat upholstery fabric to add more colour and texture.

Look for a table that is rustic in style and of a simple design. Add accessories such as a wicker basket full of throws for chillier evenings. Lighting will complete the scheme, you should be able to find some Moroccan style lights which you will be able to place candles in to reflect a gentle light into your garden, or use fairy lights to twinkle when the afternoon sun turns to dusk. If you want to add more of a beach feel then add some driftwood and pebbles to the scheme - it does all work together.

Add bright accessories

If your garden is sunny and you want some shade build a simple structure and put some wicker or willow on the top to keep out the midday sun, as an alternative you could grow plants such as vines over it.

I also loved the bright turquoise boat, now it is unlikely that you will be able to have this in your garden but you could add a splash of colour with your accessories, for example you could use an oilcloth tablecloth in bright colours.

Now all that is left to do is light the barbecue, open the wine and relax.
