Chinese and Japanese Fabrics: Modern Oriental

A modern take on the oriental look, this trend has appeared across interiors this Spring and Summer season. Oriental styling has been around since the late 17th Century when we first started trading with China, it was popular as an interior style in the 1920s and is emerging again.

As we are looking to brighten our homes, add colour and cosiness, the modern oriental style is uplifting with pretty, intricate details, natural elements and helps to create harmony and balance in our homes.

This new take moves away from the heavy reds, black, and golds from earlier iterations and towards brighter, bolder colours with shades of pink and greens, blue patterned fabrics and turquoises. It is an accessible style for timeless and modern homes alike and can be used as accents against plain backgrounds or multi layered for an eclectic look.

Furniture

Furniture

This look uses bamboo chairs and Chinese style cupboards with metallic details and fittings. Chinese furniture is often small and portable which fits the modern lifestyle. Deeply lacquered furniture for a glossy sheen is a feature of this style. Screens and bamboo tray tables can be used in different rooms and moved easily if you want a change. You could wallpaper the doors of a plain wardrobe with a chinoiserie patterned wallpaper to add a touch of the orient.

Walls

Walls

Walls can be covered in faux silk wallpapers or chinoiserie designs of cherry blossom fabrics. The Kyoto Gardens Collection from Voyage Decoration has a bamboo and a Chinese toile design of wallpapers.

Accents

Accents

Accents are readily available by way of bamboo trays that would work on coffee tables and footstools, Porcelain figures such as dragons, items with butterfly print details, textured lamp bases and lantern light shades bring in the subtle touches that can complete the look. Vases of peonies, ferns and bonsai trees bring in a natural touch to the style.

Japanese Fabrics

Japanese Fabrics

The fabrics we have seen come in that will set off this modern oriental trend include the beautiful, uplifting Myla Sunflower fabric and tranquil design of the Naoko fabric which are both part of the Montana Collection.

The Katsura Collection by Voyage features beautiful watercolour designs with a modern abstract approach, expressive marks and beautiful colour that is inspired by the changing season

There are fabrics with geometrics that are reminiscent of bamboo trellis detailing and silks and faux silks which can all be used successfully within this style. We have fabrics with cherry blossom sprigs such as the Emi, the delicate Humming birds fabric featuring hummingbirds and lanterns and the Pacific Moonstone fabric which has a softly coloured design of bamboo.
