What is jacquard fabric made from?
As the term jacquard refers to the pattern then the fabric can be made from natural fibres such as silk, linen, cotton or man-made fibres such as polyester. Damask fabric is typically woven with only one colour. Brocade fabric is another type of jacquard, which is heavier than damask. Jacquard fabrics come in different weights which make some drape better than others whilst others will be more suitable for upholstery.
Window treatments
For a classic look curtains are best, preferably floor length with a triple pinch pleat heading. Jacquard fabric is a great curtain material and will create a stylish and traditional look. There are lots of different designs and colours to choose from. You can get floral jacquard fabric as well as self-patterned versions which are great if you want to add texture without adding colour. Hang your curtains from a wooden pole and add tie-backs as a finishing touch.
Jacquard fabric for upholstery
Many jacquard fabrics are hard wearing so suitable as an upholstery fabric. Use self-patterned versions for understated elegance or patterned ones to create a statement. Some may come treated for fire retardancy whilst for others you may have to have them treated in order for them to comply with fire regulations - your upholsterer will be able to help and advise you with this.
Designing your classic interior
Classic interiors are all about creating a sophisticated and stylish feel to your room. If you live in an Edwardian or Georgian house with high ceilings and good proportions then it is simpler to design this type of interior however you can still create a classic interior in modern homes. Paint your walls in colours such as pale green, greys and creams for a light and airy feel. Many paint companies produce ‘heritage’ paint colours which are perfect for this type of scheme. For your floors choose carpets or wood.
Accessorising your scheme
Use rugs to add texture and colour. Artwork should be traditional subjects such as landscapes or portraits. Ornaments don’t have to be genuine antiques but could be reproductions such as bronzes, period style clocks, china and glassware. If you have enough ceiling height a sparkling chandelier will complete your scheme.
