What is ikat fabric?
Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric. In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed.
Ikat fabric is most commonly made from 100% cotton, for example jf ikat duck egg fabric, however it can also be made from cotton mixes, linen mixes and synthetic materials.
Ikat fabric for statement upholstery pieces
Due to its distinctive patterns ikat fabric is great to use as an upholstery fabric, you will need to check with your upholsterer to find out if it needs to be treated for fire retardancy before using. As ikat fabric comes in many different colours - from bright oranges through to neutral colours of natural and grey there is bound to be one that will fit into your scheme. If you have a mainly neutral colour scheme then selecting a colourful fabric for a chair will add a real wow factor to your room.
Geometric designs for curtains and blinds
If you want to introduce some pattern into your room but prefer geometric fabric to floral fabric then the design of ikat fabric would be an ideal choice. More suited to contemporary interiors it can also be used in traditional style homes. For example the blue rhythm fabric with its geometric style meands that it would look great made into roman blinds, for example in a study. Bespoke curtains are best made up using an informal type of heading such as pencil pleat and hung from a pole or track.
Mix and match patterns for a relaxed look
Introduce interest into your scheme by mixing and matching patterns. Striped fabrics co-ordinate perfectly with ikat fabric giving a relaxed feel to your room. To keep a sense of cohesion use fabrics with a similar colourway or use the same design in different colourways. This idea would work well for a collection of cushions on a neutral sofa or use different fabrics for curtains and upholstery. Use with wooden floors and distressed furniture to complete the look.
