How To Make a Fabric Basket

This step-by-step guide will show you how to make a fabric basket with a contrast lining. This is a practical and handy make which is also a great home decoration!

You will need:

  • Fabric
  • Lining
  • Interfacing
  • Thread
  • Hand Sewing Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure
  • Pins

Firstly, take your main fabric and cut out 2 x 40cm x 40cm pieces, repeat this for the lining fabric.

Now cut out the interfacing measuring 2 x 40cm x 40cm pieces.

Using the main fabric, cut a square from the two bottom corners measuring 9cm x 9cm, repeat this on the interfacing pieces.

Pin the interfacing to the main fabric pieces, making sure the glue side on the interfacing is facing onto the fabric. Now iron the interfacing.

Next, pin the two interfaced fabric pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, making sure to leave the top edge unsewn.

Now, pin the corner edges together and sew.

Repeat steps 3-6 with your lining pieces.

Turn your main fabric part right way around. Next, place the main fabric inside the lining and pin the top edges together, sew along the pinned edge.

Pull the fabric through the gap you left in the lining.

Next, hand sew the hole in lining closed using a simple stitch such as a ladder stitch.

Now form your basket into shape by folding over the lining an inch over the main fabric.
