Materials - What You'll Need

The materials you’ll need for this make are:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Pencil
  3. Fabric remnant (at least 1m in length)
  4. Scissors
  5. Ribbon 150cm in length
Step 1 - Create your template

Step 1 - Create your template

Firstly, use the cardboard to create your template. Trace a 30cm diameter circle onto the cardboard and cut out, repeat this onto a second piece. You now need to cut a hole for the middle, do this by cutting into the cardboard by 10cm at a chosen point. You now need to cut out a 10cm circle, giving you a doughnut shape.

Step 2 - Cut the fabric strips

Step 2 - Cut the fabric strips

When choosing what fabric to use, the fabric pieces ideally needs to be at least 1 meter in length, we used our craft bag pieces to create ours. Cut the fabrics into 5cm strips, you will need many of these so get cutting!

Depending on how big you are making your pom pom you will need different amounts of strips. For a 30cm diameter pom pom, we cut around 50 strips of fabric. Depending on what you would like your pom pom to look like, use a range of different coloured and textured fabrics to create a wonderfully coloured pom pom!

Step 3 - Wind the fabric remnants around the template

Step 3 - Wind the fabric remnants around the template

Sandwich together the two cardboard circles and start wrapping your fabric strips around this. Do this by feeding the fabric pieces through the centre circle repeatedly, create random colour and pattern by winding around the cardboard in different places. Repeat this process until you can’t fit anymore fabric through.

Step 4 - Create the Fabric Pom Pom

Step 4 - Create the Fabric Pom Pom

Now you are ready to cut your pom pom off the template (this part will be adults only as it can be fiddly!) Insert your scissors between the cardboard circles and carefully snip the layers of wrapped fabric all the way round.

Fetch your piece of 150cm length of ribbon and wrap and knot three times around the pom pom making sure to secure tightly, do not cut excess ribbon as this will be used to hang your pom pom.

Pull away the cardboard template using the cut you initially did. Trim the fabric peices to make the perfect fabric pom pom!
