Interior Trend - Dark and Moody

Dark and moody interiors are a well established, popular trend with home interior journalists and across Instagram, and have been for a long time.

Greys and inky blues in particular will continue to be a popular colour trend this year. Characterised by dark painted walls, darker woods, and sumptuous fabrics such as velvet, it shows that a dark, dramatic look can be cocooning and cosy. Often teemed with lots of house plants and period furniture the trend looks sophisticated and gives a luxurious impression.

In fabrics

In fabrics we are seeing this with the popularity of velvets and with florals and botanicals with dark backgrounds such as the Clarke and Clarke Botanica range. Plain fabrics such as our JF Velvet in Midnight or Aegean blue epitomise this style. The Bampton Velvet FR in Graphite and Grey would be perfect for sofas or upholstery.

On walls

Walls painted in Matt tones of black, grey or inky blues work well with sofas in grey upholstery, velvets and vintage brown leather. When paired with berry and jewel tones in cushions and throws this creates an especially rich look. Darker interiors work well with Mid-century furniture and especially in period homes built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Walls look dramatic in dark colours when paired with high ceilings with cornicing details. It is a look that works for both minimalists and those that like a more eccentric look, with lots of framed prints and quirky accessories. Some use dark walls throughout their whole room but you could just have one as a feature wall.

Pair with metallics

Pair with metallics

Darker interiors look rich and inviting with fabrics in metallic and shimmery tones. The Prestigious Cascade range has a collection of satiny blues with leafy silhouettes and tumbling ferns. When used with interiors with darker walls they catch the light and shine.

Not only are we seeing plain, dark walls but intense, dark and bold wallpaper designs are on trend. The dark and moody trend moves towards a more flamboyant style when adding a tropical twist. The Animalia collection from Clarke and Clarke features tropical botanicals with animals such as flamingos, lions, peacocks and parrots. Dark and moody can be brightened up with tropical bright accessories and lots of leafy plants.
