Plaid fabric colourways
Highland themes continue to be big news in interiors. But creating the Scottish hunting lodge feel doesn’t mean you have to stick to traditional colourways. Plaid fabric is commonly available in reds, greens and naturals. But why not be brave, and try a tartan fabric in a more contemporary colour, such as hot pink, raspberry or turquoise?
You can pick and choose how you use your tartan fabric to update an existing scheme or create something completely new. Tartan fabric is ideal for curtains or to lift a scheme with a scattering of cushions.
Layer textures for a highland inspired theme
For a successful scheme, try layering your tartan fabric with other patterns and textures.
You could use fabrics depicting hunting images, thistles or game birds for curtains, upholstery and cushions, or introduce texture with wool and velvet to make your room feel cosy. Mixing and matching your fabrics will help create a relaxed feel, but to keep the scheme feeling coordinated, try to stick to one colour palette.
By layering textures with cushions piled on the sofa, a basketful of woollen throws and a rug on the floor, you’ll create a scheme that’s warm and welcoming.
Accessorise for a rustic, hunting lodge feel
Pairing your tartan fabric with highland-inspired accessories helps create a hunting lodge look that’s laid-back and comfortable.
A stag’s head is the classic hunting lodge accessory, but if you don’t want a real one adorning your room (I know I don't!), there are fabric, metal and even painted cardboard replicas that’ll bring a quirky and fun feel to your room.
Or, you could accessorise with cushions depicting highland cows or sheep for a rustic feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a real fire, a basket of logs would look great, but if not, try using a basket of pine cones to bring a touch of the outside in.
