Who was William Morris?
William Morris was an English textile designer who is associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. He was also a poet, novelist and socialist activist. He was born in 1834 and died in 1896. He said 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful'. He lived for a while in Kelmscott Manor in the Cotswolds.
Design a Victorian dining room using William Morris fabric
The dining room is a great place to use William Morris fabric. It can be used as an upholstery fabric to cover dining chairs. Its shades of forest greens and muddy browns create a relaxing atmosphere - ideal for a dining room. You can also use the same fabric for curtains and a patterned wallpaper on your walls - this is not a minimalist look! A dark wooden floor would go with this look along with a patterned rug. This look is reminiscent of Victorian interiors which were quite cluttered with heavy dark wood furniture and dark or patterned walls.

William Morris fabric for a contemporary look
If you want to make this a more contemporary look then try using the William Morris fabric in one place either for curtains or upholstery and keep walls plain and neutral, perhaps in a pale green or taupe. Floors should be wooden or a plain neutral carpet so that the fabric is the focal point of the room. This is easier to live with than the high Victorian look and more suited to today’s interiors. As the designs are inspired by nature accessorise your scheme by using vases of fresh flowers.
Choose your curtain heading to suit your style
If you are going to use your William Morris fabric in a traditional setting then choose a formal heading such as triple pinch pleat or goblet heading and then hang from a curtain pole and use tie-backs to complete the look. If you want a more relaxed and informal look then choose a pencil pleat heading. For a contemporary look select an eyelet heading. Whichever heading you choose your William Morris fabric will look great.
