Do Curtains Need Lining?

There are many reasons for choosing curtain lining. Linings will most importantly protect your curtains from direct sunlight and reduce fading. Additionally, curtain lining fabric will increase privacy and will enhance the appearance of your chosen curtain fabric by adding structure and shape. Many types of lining will also help with insulation, thermal lining being the best choice for this.

Something to keep in mind is that not all curtains will need lining. Interlined curtains have three layers of fabric. The outer or patterned fabric that you see, an inner layer of fabric known as interlining and a rear fabric that is lining. Interlining is used to pad out a lighter weight fabric to give the curtains a fuller look or to give the curtains an extra layer to keep warmth in the room.

Sometimes the interlining is a separate layer from the lining and curtain fabric, but you can get bonded lining fabric which has the interlining bonded to the lining.
