What is Lining Fabric For Curtains?
Curtain lining fabric is attached to the back of a curtain and can hold several properties such as being thermal, blackout, plain or patterned. Whether you are wanting a fuller looking curtain or maybe you are needing curtains to block out the sunlight, it’s important to know what type of lining will suit your need. Lining also helps gives shape to curtains and helps to protect the front facing fabric.

Do Curtains Need Lining?
There are many reasons for choosing curtain lining. Linings will most importantly protect your curtains from direct sunlight and reduce fading. Additionally, curtain lining fabric will increase privacy and will enhance the appearance of your chosen curtain fabric by adding structure and shape. Many types of lining will also help with insulation, thermal lining being the best choice for this.
Something to keep in mind is that not all curtains will need lining. It is down to personal taste and what look you are trying to achieve but thicker fabrics such as wool have good structure and so may not need extra volume. Sheers and voiles won’t need a lining as they naturally let the light through and have a flowing drape.
What is the difference between lined and interlined curtains?
Interlined curtains have three layers of fabric. The outer or patterned fabric that you see, an inner layer of fabric known as interlining and a rear fabric that is lining. Interlining is used to pad out a lighter weight fabric to give the curtains a fuller look or to give the curtains an extra layer to keep warmth in the room.
Sometimes the interlining is a separate layer from the lining and curtain fabric, but you can get bonded lining fabric which has the interlining bonded to the lining.
Not all curtains have interlining, but most will have a lining of some kind, to either make the curtains hang with fullness, to help to prevent the curtain front fabric from fading or to prevent light leaking into the room. Lining can be used on all heading types such as pencil pleat, pinch pleat and an eyelet curtain.
We also stock a nap lining that is brushed cotton on one side, it’s an in between version of using lining and interlining and gives curtains more body.
How do you attach blackout lining to curtains?
Blackout curtain lining is usually sewn to the back of the curtain instead of a regular lining. If your curtains are already lined then a blackout lining can be hung behind the existing curtains if the track or pole can take the weight of both.
Do blackout curtains keep a room cool?
Blackout curtains will keep a room cooler as they reduce the amount of heat transferred through a window.
What are thermal lined curtains?
Thermal lined curtains are curtains that have a thermal lining. Thermal lining has heat retention properties and will also help keep out the drafts from windows keeping you cosy on a cold night. Thermal curtains will also keep the heat out of a room.
Can I machine wash thermal curtains?
We do not recommend machine washing curtains as often the lining will shrink at a different rate to the curtain fabric. Curtains are usually dry clean only.
