What is polyester fabric?

Practical, inexpensive and a master of disguise, it's no wonder that polyester fabric is a mainstay in modern schemes.

Here's an introduction to this revolutionary man-made material for the '40's - and a few ideas of how it could benefit your home.

The world's favourite synthetic fibre

The world's favourite synthetic fibre

Polyester fabric came to prominence in the late '40's, and in the post-millennium, it remains one of the most popular synthetic fabrics on the market and is a staple fiber. Whether you realise it or not, polyester fabric is everywhere - from curtains to cushions and even polyester clothing - and its unique qualities offer real advantages over more aspirational natural materials like cotton and silk.

Practical benefits at a competitive price

The first think to note is that polyester fabric is considerably less expensive than many rivals - and the practical benefits don't end there. Polyester fabric is also highly durable, while its unique chemical makeup means it's resistant to stains, won't fade in sunlight and shouldn't stretch, shrink or wrinkle. For homes with children, it's reassuring to note that this synthetic material also washes easily, dries fast and is highly insulating, although unless we state the fabric is washable we recommend dry cleaning our fabrics. Just be sure to choose a good quality polyester fabric, as cheaper ones can have an undesirable 'shiny' appearance.

The synthetic fibre that looks like silk

One of the greatest qualities of polyester fabric is the ability to transform its appearance to replicate almost any other material.  Our popular faux silk fabrics, for example, offer all the luxurious look and feel of traditional silk - and it's only on closer inspection that you'll realise they're actually made of pure polyester fabric. It's an option well worth investigating, as faux silk is not only cheaper, but also avoids the potential fading and rotting of the 'real' thing.

The perfect ingredient for a fibre blend

Polyester fabric is popular in its own right, but just as common are the various blends that result when polyester is combined with other fibres. Try a cotton-polyester blend for your ticking fabric, for example, a polyester-viscose combination for your curtains, or maybe a polyester-wool crepe fabric. It’s a great choice for home furnishings and to get the best of both worlds.
