What is Ticking Fabric and How To use It

Ticking fabric is a popular choice for curtains, blinds and upholstery – it's usually a cotton or linen fabric mix tightly woven with a timeless stripe. If you’re looking for a contemporary interior choice that won’t go out of fashion, incorporating the traditional ticking style is a fantastic solution.

Ticking fabric is a classic choice for soft furnishings which has endured ever-changing trends. Typically used as upholstery and curtain fabric, ticking comes in two colours, the main cloth being woven in cream or white yarn and then a bold colour as the main stripe. The weave is a herringbone style with a feathered striped edge, this makes the stripe appear larger. Discover more about what ticking fabric is and how you can use it, in this handy article.

What Is Ticking Fabric?

What Is Ticking Fabric?

The word ‘Ticking’ originates from the 1940’s where they would use ‘Tick’ a densely woven herringbone cloth to cover mattresses for utility use. This would ensure the feathers and straw would not poke through when in use. The stripe was then developed over time to the classic striped herringbone look of the ticking fabric we see today. Not only is the stripe attractive but it makes the fabric durable and highly practical.
